Water is one of the basic
requirements for the mankind for his survival. Water on the Earth is available
in various forms including sea water, ice, lakes, river and groundwater. Sea water
occupies in major percentages on the earth, however it is not directly useful
for men in day to day life. Similarly, the large quantity of fresh water
available in the polar region in the form of ice which is also not readily
available. The surface and groundwater are the main source of water being
utilized for cultivation, drinking water and domestic purposes. The surface reservoirs
and groundwater aquifers are being receiving water through rainfall. In Indian subcontinent,
agriculture activities are the prime source of livelihood for the majority of
the population. If monsoon fails, there will be scarcity of water for
irrigation as well as domestic need. This has lead to prevailing of frequent
drought condition in many parts of the country. The conjunctive use of surface
and groundwater may solve this problem to some extent. However, a full proof of
water management practices is yet to be adopted in this country. The year old
traditional water management practices are gradually vanishing. The surface
water reservoirs like lakes, ponds, small streams were eliminated due to fast
growing urbanization and industrial development. In this context, it is
necessary to review the historical method of water management practices,
particularly in South India. In addition, the recent developments in water
development need to be addressed. In this regard, a Regional Workshop on “Artificial
Recharge and Watershed Management” was conducted at Periyar University through
UGC sponsored project. Geologists, groundwater engineers, NGO’s, academic
professionals, scholars and students were attended the meeting. The purpose of
the Regional Workshop was to explore the ideas and methods of historical and
recent trends of water management practices. The research articles presented in
the Workshop are published as proceeding in this book. The book comprises of
seven articles on various subjects include Irrigation and water management techniques
in the history of Tamil Nadu and in India, irrigation management and economic
transformation, ground water development and management, sustainable
agriculture practices, GIS technique in artificial recharge studies and water
level fluctuation study. The collective information available in this book will
be useful for the field level scientists, academicians and students.
